Syria and Lebanon have agreed to establish diplomatic ties and exchange ambassadors.
Syrian government sources said the decision came during a meeting between President Bashar al-Assad and his Lebanese counterpart, Michel Suleiman, in Damascus. The two-day visit is the first by a Lebanese president to Syria since the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri in Beirut. The murder was widely blamed on Damascus, and domestic and international outrage eventually led to the withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon after a military presence of almost 30 years.
