Georgia and Russia have agreed to a modified peace plan brokered by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, ending six days of fighting. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev earlier ordered a halt to Russia's military offensive against Georgia.

Dalai Lama arrives in France for 12-day visit ... French President Sarkozy later agreed on principles aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the Caucasus conflict. This included a ceasefire, a pledge to renounce force, free passage for humanitarian aid and the return of troops to their bases. Speaking at a joint press conference in the Georgian capital Tbilisi, Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili said there were still some sticking points, including Russian peacekeepers in Georgia's breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Meanwhile in Brussels, NATO has renewed its pledge to accept Georgia as a full member of the western military alliance.
