Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is in Tehran for talks with the leaders of regional ally Iran.
Iranian state-run television reported that Assad met President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad immediately after his arrival and that both leaders emphasised the importance of bilateral cooperation for improving stability and security in the region. Earlierr, Iran's ambassador to Syria Ahmad Moussavi said that the talks would include Tehran's nuclear programme, which Western countries say is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Tehran insists it is purely for peaceful purposes. Local media said that Assad would also meet Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
