Six hundred tonnes of household waste from the southern Italian city of Naples has arrived in Germany for incineration.
The delivery is part of an authorized scheme to dispose of 160,000 tonnes of waste from Italy's southern Campania region at special incinerators in Germany over the next few months. Many plants use the waste to generate electricity. In April, ahead of Italy's election, untreated waste piled up around Naples. Officials blamed the crisis on a lack of disposal methods and organised crime control of local landfill sites. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi recently vowed that Italy would build new incinerators.
