31.07.2008 - UN Security Council to vote on extending peackeepers in Darfur

The United Nations Security Council is set to renew a mandate for peacekeepers in the Sudandese province of Darfur on Thursday. Western powers have agreed to a wording in the text that would allow the court to suspend any future International Criminal Court indictment of Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir on war crimes.

he would never deal with or appear before such a court, and African leaders fear the situation in Darfur might deteriorate if he were arrested.  An estimated 200,000 people have died and 2.5 million been driven from their homes in Darfur since violence broke out five years ago. A combined UN and African Union force of 9,500 is currently in the region. The troops have been rendered largely ineffective due to hold-ups by customs staff of badly-needed helicopters and other equipment for the mission
