German Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed a Turkish court's decision not to ban Turkey's ruling party for undermining secularism.
A spokesperson for Merkel's office said the chancellor personally conveyed her relief to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying stability and democratic order in Turkey were central concerns. Turkey is a NATO ally, as well as a major partner for Germany and the European Union. The EU had expressed concern over the attempt to outlaw the AKP.
