Separatist officials in Georgia's breakaway province of South Ossetia say at one person was killed and several other people were wounded by Georgian forces.
South Ossetian rebel leaders said Georgian troops shelled the region's main city, Tskhinvali. Afterwards, intensive fire reportedly followed. Both sides blamed the other for the hostilities. Georgia's South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions broke away from central rule during wars in the 1990's. Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili sees the re-integration of both regions as a top priority in an attempt to join NATO and the European Union.
