Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou, who took office in May, has pledged to revitalise the island's economy with closer trade and tourism ties to China. As many as 3,000 Chinese tourists are expected to visit Taiwan a day. China claims sovereignty over self-ruled Taiwan and has vowed to bring the island under its rule, by force if necessary.
