Germany to mark 60th anniversary of Berlin Airlift ...
Projects ... of the Cold War, the airlift pitted the United States and Soviet Union against one another for the first time after World War Two. Germany has rolled out the red carpet at special ceremonies in Berlin and Frankfurt for a few of the former US, British and French pilots, who saved West Berlin from being starved into submission by Josef Stalin. Operating almost non-stop and through a harsh winter, the airlift ferried over two million tons of supplies in more than 270,000 flights into West Berlin, mostly from a base in Frankfurt. Thirty-nine British and 31 US pilots lost their lives before the Soviet blockade was called off in May of 1949.
