Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned his Georgian counterpart not to provoke Russian peacekeepers in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia.
This comes a day after Georgian police reportedly detained several Russian peacekeepers that were transporting guided missiles in a western Georgian region just outside Abkhazia. The peacekeepers were released on Wednesday, but 20 anti-tank missiles have been withheld by Georgian authorities. The tensions surrounding rebel Abkhazia have soared since Moscow announced in April that it would establish formal ties with Abkhaz separatists. Georgia suspects Russia is planning to annex the breakaway region.
