20.05.2008 - Argentine farmers signal compromise

Argentine farmers have announced plans to suspend a 13-day strike and resume selling grain.

The Czech Republic news are represented by www.paristravelguide.info

The move opens the way for renewed negotiations with the government, which has frozen grain exports in a power struggle with Argentine farmers that dates back to March . Argentina is the world's second biggest supplier of corn and third biggest supplier of soy, however exports have been disrupted by a dispute over government plans to raise taxes on foreign sales. Farmers have bitterly resisted the tax hikes with strike actions that have caused food shortages in Argentina. The dispute has pushed up soy prices on world markets.
