Colombian prosecutors have arrested a cousin of President Alvaro Uribe for alleged ties to paramilitary death squads.
Mario Uribe had earlier sought political asylum at the Costa Rican embassy in Bogota but his application was refused. The arrest of Uribe, a former senator and key ally of President Uribe, edges the so-called "para-political" scandal closer to the president's office. Colombian investigators are probing as many as 60 Colombian lawmakers for their ties to counter-insurgency militias that are battling leftist guerrillas.
