Media exit polls in Paraguay's presidential elections suggest that opposition candidate and ex-bishop Fernando Lugo has gained a narrow victory.
Lugo was reportedly winning between 41 and 43 percent of votes, ahead of ruling party candidate Blanca Ovelar gaining between 36 and 38 percent. Lino Oviedo a retired army general was in third place with 16 percent of the vote. Lugo heads a centre-left coalition called the Patriotic Alliance for Change. He's vowed to tackle inequality and widespread corruption. The elections are being monitored by 70 representatives of the Organisation of American States. Outgoing President Nicanor Duarte cannot constitutionally seek re-election.
