Reports from Gaza say fierce fighting has broken out between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen near the Kissufim border crossing.
One Israeli soldier was killed and another injured when a blast destroyed their jeep, Palestinian reports say. The Israeli army has not commented.
Israeli tanks were rushed to the area helicopters landed to evacuate the wounded, eyewitnesses say.
The clashes come three days after Israel ended a major offensive in Gaza.
More than 120 Palestinians were killed in the incursion, which the Israelis say aimed to stop rocket fire into Israel by Palestinian militants.
Two Israeli soldiers and an Israeli civilian were also killed over the same period.
There have been sporadic clashed since.
